If I have a citation for an article and I want to find the full-text I would take the following steps:
R Michael Alvarez, and Jason L Saving. "Deficits, democrats, and distributive benefits: Congressional elections and the pork barrel in the 1980s." Political Research Quarterly 50.4 (1997): 809-831. Research Library, ProQuest. Web. 6 Dec. 2010.
First identify the name/title of the publication where the article appeared. In this example it is Political Research Quarterly. I’ll then search the Journals by Title finder on the library’s homepage under Research Tools:
If the publication is available full-text in one of the library databases it will appear in the results list:
Click on the title to see a list of the databases and the years covered, in this case it is found in a number of sources and I need to choose one that includes volume 50.4 (1997): 809-831. The only one that won’t work for me from the list below is Sage Premier because its coverage of Political Research Quarterly doesn’t begin until volume 52.1 (1999). I’m familiar with the Periodicals Archive Online Collection by ProQuest so I’ll select that one.
I’m now in the ProQuest database where I can keyword search within the publication Political Research Quarterly or browse for the volume and issue that I need to find. I’ll use the drop down menus to select 1997 then volume 50 issue 4. I click on "view issue" then scroll down until I find the title of the article I’m looking for, in this case "Deficits, democrats, and distributive benefits: Congressional elections and the pork barrel in the 1980s."
